This was the year of the Stingrays. On one drift dive from Atalaia we saw in the region of 20 -30 rays. I caught this one on camera opposite as it took off in alarm from the sandy bottom raising its venomous tail spine in defence. These can inflict a very painful wound but this is rarely life-threatening. This photograph is taken from side-on, never swim close over the top of a stingray!
